EO/AA This position provides newly certified staff practical experience in applying ICD:9 coding guidelines in order to become a proficient inpatient coder. This position works in conjunction with Health Information Coding Educator, and Coding Leadership, to complete all applicable educational modules, including didactic and hands on experience. At the conclusion of each area of study, this position will demonstrate proficiency in the following: thorough review of inpatient records, accurately abstract pertinent data elements from the patient record, accurately assign International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD:9) diagnoses and procedure codes, per Official Coding Guidelines and HIM Policies and conjunction with Inpatient Coding Educator, and Coding Leadership, reviews medical records and assigns accurate ICD:9 diagnoses and procedure codes for progressively complex cases.Abstracts pertinent data from the patient health records.Ensures adherence to Health Information Coding policies and Official Coding Guidelines as published by CMS and Cooperating conjunction with Coding Educator / Coding Leadership, utilizes coding provider query process to request additional information for incomplete, vague, or ambiguous documentation.Responsible for maintaining current ICD:9 coding skills in keeping with regulatory changes.Participates in performance improvement initiatives as assigned.Achieves agreed upon productivity goals.Knowledge / Skills / AbilitiesKnowledge of basic coding conventions and use of coding nomenclature.Ability to assimilate educational material and demonstrate understanding in each specialty area, per curriculum provided by Coding Educator.Must abide by Hospital, State, and Federal coding guidelines.QualificationsRequiredMust possess at least one of the following certifications; Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Coder : Hospital (CPC:H).Working Conditions and Physical DemandsEmployee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.This is a sedentary position that may exert up to 10 pounds and may lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
